More About Doreen Carter, CPA

Doreen Carter is not your typical CPA (we didn’t see a pocket protector anywhere!). To get to know her beyond her education of an MBA from Webster University in Beaufort, South Carolina and Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and additional certifications: Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and Certification in HealthCare Compliance (CHC), we sat down and talked with Doreen to learn more about her business and her background. 

Tell me a little about you and your business.

Good afternoon! I'm so excited to be talking with you today. I am a CPA- Certified Public Accountant. This means that I can provide tax planning and preparation services, financial statement compilations, business consulting services and represent my clients in IRS matters. I can also perform audits and represent my clients to state tax offices where I’m licensed (North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia). I serve clients throughout the United States, many of whom are military - active duty and veterans. They and their families face unique tax and financial challenges. I enjoy working with them to help navigate the regulations - particularly when they move from one state to another. Here in North Carolina, I am centrally located so that clients from Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Cary, and Mebane can easily meet with me – either in my office or their office or home.

What part of your work gives you the most personal satisfaction?

I love empowering my clients to understand their finances and the tax regulations that apply to them. We all know how confusing the tax rules are, and they are always changing. I am able to help clients with more efficient record keeping and more efficient business practices to ensure they are compliant with applicable federal and state regulations. 

I have especially enjoyed working with non-profit organizations to complete their annual 990 tax returns, identifying more efficient ways to improve their record keeping and cash handling processes. In cases where these organizations are staffed by volunteers, it is critical to develop appropriate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the applicable state and federal regulations.

We chose Doreen for our small business because she made taxes SO easy for us! She takes the time to explain everything to us until we understand it completely. She is easy to contact and always there to answer any questions we may have. Doreen has even helped us more than a few times when we were having trouble with quickbooks and reconciling errors. We also like how she meets with us multiple times through out the year so that we are never behind or scrambling last minute to get everything together. We always know what to expect and that gives us HUGE peace of mind! Overall, I would recommend Doreen to anyone looking to simplify taxes and save money!

So, I hear your favorite part of the job is taxes. Is that true? 

[Laughs…] Individual and small business taxes are my favorite activities!!! I enjoy educating my clients in tax matters and recordkeeping practices that apply to them. It is very satisfying helping my clients be empowered to better manage their finances and ensure compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements. I enjoy helping them find efficient processes that work for them to help them achieve this goal.

I have two fur babies (dogs) - Jeremiah and Lucy. I LOVE traveling – there is just so much to see in the U.S. and across this beautiful world! Cruising is my favorite way to see the world and continue learning (a life-long journey!). I do volunteer work, including service as U.S. Ministry Coordinator for Joseph Kalema Ministries, working with Junior Achievement to teach business classes to middle school students, and supporting animal rights and dog rescue groups.

I also love public speaking. I enjoy sharing knowledge and educating people! I have given seminars on everything from the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (corporate auditing and accountability) to organizational skills for work and life to sexual harassment training for the Catholic Dioceses. I enjoy teaching other accounting/auditing professionals, sharing experiences, and helping them to address their particular challenges within their organizations. As an adjunct faculty member at Savannah State University, I had the opportunity to help young adults position themselves for successful careers, and enhance knowledge of seasoned adults. I also love sharing the word of God! The bigger the arena, the more ears to hear His message!!
